Small business owners may look enviously at large companies that receive government incentives to reinvest in their operations. Canada, but the truth is that there are many government programs to help the “small” go green, train workers, conduct research, and dominate foreign markets.
“There are definitely a lot of programs out there,” says Corinne Pohlmann, vice-president of policy and engagement at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). “Even if you already know about them, it’s one of the problems that small businesses face, and if they do know, it can be difficult to actually operate.”
Steps To Get Government Grants For Your Small Business
Federal and provincial funding is available to help small businesses grow, but they need to be smart about identifying and applying for funding programs. Above all, they need to present a picture of a growing company, says Bernadeen McLeod, president and owner of Brampton, Ont.-based Mentor Works, which helps companies find government funding.
“It’s probably your first line of fitness,” he says. “The state will only give you money if you can create jobs and show additional income, but if you can’t do that, you won’t be a good recipient of money. Even if I choose a simple training program for you, you have to show me more [opportunities] to create jobs.”
McLeod’s firm specializes in managing 55 existing federal and provincial programs on behalf of business clients seeking payroll assistance, training programs, marketing support and other programs. “Our goal isn’t to teach companies to [use] all 55, we’re just saying, ‘Pick five or six every year, get addicted to them and reapply.'”
Among the financial programs that have been introduced are McLeod’s favorite Southwestern Ontario Development Fund (SWODF), a provincial program that provides grants to create 10 jobs.

He says another “workhorse” is the CME SMART program, a program funded in partnership with the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) trade association that provides up to $100 for capital equipment. For food producers, there is Growth Forward 2 (GF2), a federal-provincial cost-sharing program tailored to the needs of each province or territory.
A federal support program that CFIB’s Pohlmann hears rave reviews about is the Industrial Research Assistance Group Program (IRAP). It offers consulting services, grants and networking with experts and potential business partners.
“It actually gives advice and guidance in creating new innovations in your company, whether it’s a new product or a new process,” says Pohlmann. “We like it because it’s not just focused on the top. It also helps developers and other types of traditional businesses that want to be innovative. Therefore, it seems more accessible than other programs that focus more on “sexy” types of innovation. .”
Stephanie Sang, founder and CEO of Vancouver-based Granted Consulting, helps companies find a range of grants, but says she often starts with recruiting and training. One of his interests is the Canada Job Grant program, which is federally funded but administered by the provinces. It gives companies money to send employees to third-party training providers, such as secondary education centers, or to bring in independent trainers.
