But many measures of economic growth, such as productivity growth and business dynamism, have been modest at best in recent years. The solution to this apparent paradox is dramatic heterogeneity between sectors, with some industries experiencing strong innovation and entrepreneurship and others experiencing stagnation. By construction, the effect of innovation and entrepreneurship on overall economic performance is the cumulative effect of their effects on individual sectors. Understanding the growth potential in the aggregate economy therefore depends on understanding the growth potential of each sector. This perspective motivates the twelve studies from different sectors presented in this volume. Each study identifies specific productivity improvements made possible by innovation and entrepreneurship, for example as a result of new production technologies, increased competition or new organizational forms. These twelve studies, along with three synthesis chapters, provide new insights into sectoral patterns and focus on the contribution of innovation and entrepreneurship to economic growth.
