Did you know that your liver is the largest organ in your body? With this in mind, it is not surprising how many essential functions the liver performs. Your liver not only detoxifies your blood, but also processes nutrients and produces lipids, carbohydrates and amino acids.
Your liver produces a variety of proteins, such as albumin and fibrinogen, the two main plasma proteins that are responsible for many important functions. Albumin keeps blood volume balanced and transports essential amino acids throughout the body, while fibrinogen ensures proper blood clotting.

Some of the most exciting research into how amino acids benefit liver health was conducted by a team of scientists based in Kyoto, Japan. The team hypothesized that BCAA supplementation could slow, or possibly even stop, the progression of chronic liver disease.

After inducing liver disease in one group of mice, the researchers then divided the mice into two groups. One group received a diet supplemented with three BCAAs: valine, leucine and isoleucine. Another was the control group. During the 11-week study, weekly blood samples were taken from both groups of mice. At the end of the study, the researchers took liver samples.
The results of BCAA supplementation were quite dramatic. Blood levels of a liver enzyme called AST, which increases with the severity of liver damage, were on average 22% lower for the group given BCAA compared to the control group. And CTGF protein levels, a marker of liver scarring, were on average 75% higher in the control group.
Perhaps most importantly, levels of an enzyme called caspase 3 and a protein called albumin, which indicate the rate of cell death, were 100% and 80% higher, respectively, in the control group.
Based on these changes, the researchers concluded: “Supplementation with branched-chain amino acids delays the progression of chronic liver disease” and does so specifically by slowing the death of liver cells.

Alarmingly, the death rate from liver disease is on the rise in the United States, according to an analysis of data collected from across the country. Lead author Zober M. Unosi, MD, MPH, attributes this to the rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
“I believe it all has to do with the huge increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes in this country,” said Dr. UNOSI said in an interview before the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. “These two risk factors drive NAFLD and its progressive form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). They account for at least part of the increased mortality associated with liver disease.”
Dr. Yunosi and colleagues analyzed findings from 838,809 deaths related to chronic liver disease. They found that overall mortality for chronic liver disease increased by 1.3% for men and 2.5% for women.
Non-alcoholic liver disease was the most common cause of death associated with chronic liver disease (34.7%), followed by alcoholic liver disease (28.8%) and chronic hepatitis C (21.1%). Between 2007 and 2016, the death rate from NAFLD increased from 7.6 to 9.0 per 100,000.

Dr. One of the most important points from the analysis, Unosi said, is that NASH — the most severe form of NAFLD — is fairly common in the United States. “These patients are under-recognized and under-diagnosed because they are asymptomatic.” But fatty liver disease can progress to full cirrhosis. Unosi believes it is important to identify treatments that can help fight the disease.
