How To Start Own Clothing Line
In this post, I’ll share my tips for starting an eco-friendly line. I’ve worked with about 50 (maybe 75…) sustainable clothing lines, and that’s what new brands know most helpfully.

Many people put sustainable and ethical in the same category, and although they are often seen together, they are different. Sustainable is about a brand’s impact on the environment, while ethical is about the health and well-being of all people and animals involved in the production process. Products that use materials such as leather, wool, silk, angora and alpaca have ethical considerations, people have different views on this. Some people are vegan and will not buy these products, while others may be willing to buy as long as good animal welfare is ensured.
It’s important to define what sustainable and/or ethical means to you and make it a core part of your brand identity and philosophy. A sustainable brand will never appeal to everyone – there is currently no way to produce a 100% sustainable product when you consider emissions, raw materials and everything else that goes into the product (although as technology advances, I hope we’ll see a 100% option in the near future). Because of this, it is important to clearly describe your mission, your views and opinions so that the client can make an informed choice.
Creating an eco-brand encompasses the business as a whole – from how you light your office, to how you deliver and receive goods, to the materials and processes involved in your production. Consumers expect brands to be sustainable, not just their clothes, so if you send them products wrapped in lots of plastic, they’re likely to be disappointed. Many sustainable clothing companies offset the carbon in their supply and use recycled packaging that is biodegradable, for example. You can find more tips in this article.
This really pisses me off! Because sustainability has become a buzzword, some brands and suppliers use the term even though their products are actually harmful to the environment – this is called greenwashing. Savvy consumers are always looking for greenwashing professionals, so transparency is especially important.
How To Start A Clothing Brand In 2023
Greenwashing makes it difficult to verify your products because you often have to trust the supplier and what they say is true. One way to ensure the sustainability of your fabrics is to look to recognized certifications such as Oeko-Tex or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). If you’re not sure if a certificate is genuine or don’t know what to look out for, you can contact these agencies directly to check their database.
A truly sustainable company not only thinks about the production of the clothes and the processes it uses, but also thinks about what happens to the clothes when they can no longer be worn. Of course, we want to make clothes last, but nothing lasts forever. By using fully bio-based materials, brands can ensure that clothing is easily decomposed rather than sitting in a landfill for the next few hundred years. If you use fabrics like recycled polyester, yes, it makes good use of existing plastic, but it will be in the trash for hundreds of years because it is essentially plastic. To address this, some brands have introduced recycling schemes, repair services or encouraged customers to refurbish their products or donate them to someone who likes to sew.
If you want to work ethically, you’ll want to work with a trusted factory. If you cannot visit the factory yourself, you can organize an independent audit. Like many people, I believe that a basic human right should be fair pay and a safe work environment. Unfortunately for many this is not the case and slave labor is still prevalent in fashion production; Something ethical brands should know. Also note that even if you live in a “developed” country, slave labor still happens there – don’t assume local law means that staff are protected, unfortunately this is not always the case.
For sustainable production, you should ask the supplier about their methods. For example, if you are dying fabrics, you should consider a closed process, which means that no water is wasted and no toxic dyes are released into local rivers. You can ask them where their energy comes from (for example, do they use clean energy like solar panels) and what steps have they taken to reduce emissions. You’ll find that people who are passionate about sustainability will be proud to tell you about their methods, while those who aren’t tend to change the subject! Of course, it’s always good to do additional research and get as much information as possible.
