Fueled by a desire to help other women, I hit the “Publish” button in January 2018 to make sure no one else learns what I’ve learned.

Despite having book guides on my way, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I had 1000 downloads in the first week and within 30 days of publication I had two requests to speak to a group of young professionals. I take days off to share an empowering message.
And even though it was a full-time job releasing the book, it was more than exhausting, but the process showed me that I could transform the book into something else. Maybe I could start a mission-based business that could change thousands of engineers for the better.
Over the next few months, I thought about what my business could look like. I worked to find the right mentors so I could better understand the risks involved in taking the entrepreneurial leap.
I was equal parts scared and excited, but I knew this was the right leap for me and the best I could do if I wanted to make a big impact in the industry. Time is not just a small leap, but a plunge off the cliff into the unknown.

When I picture an entrepreneur, I think of a visionary, an inspiration, like Elon Musk, Oprah, or Steve Jobs. I think of an entrepreneur as an innovator or risk taker.
Those qualities cannot be far from my nature. I take calculated risks, but in general, I am a risk taker. My creative traits go beyond holding patents to problem solving, teaching, consulting, and writing.

Even then, you can establish your authority in your field by publishing technical articles on LinkedIn or your employer blog.

Starting a YouTube channel, website, blog or podcast costs very little to start a business. Setting up a store on Amazon, Shopify, or eBay is easy. The book is a bit of a big commitment, but it was right for me (it might not be right for you).
Obviously, these “side projects” require time, but they are not difficult if you apply yourself, and if you allow a small budget for the required automation software, many things can be done automatically. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make the time. If you can’t make the time… well, maybe entrepreneurship isn’t the right path for you.
After all, these types of projects regularly force you to step out of that comfort zone, which is important for those looking at the entrepreneurial path.
Many of today’s most successful entrepreneurs took years to establish themselves. Overnight success stories are myths. Starting a side project allows you to use your day job first to support your dream, without the financial hassle of jumping into a half-baked idea with no market at all.
