The cell membrane serves a variety of functions. As mentioned before, the cell membrane acts as a barrier that allows some important substances to enter the cell while keeping some important substances outside the cell. However, the cell membrane provides support and balance to a cell, helping it maintain its shape. The cell membrane serves as an anchor point for the cytoskeleton of the cell in some organisms and is attached to the cell wall of plant cells.

The cell membrane helps control cell growth by controlling the processes of exocytosis and endocytosis. In exocytosis, vesicles containing lipids and proteins fuse with the cell membrane, which has the effect of increasing the overall size of the cell. Endocytosis serves the opposite function by removing proteins and lipids from the cell and transporting them inside the cell, reducing the size of the cell membrane and the cell itself.

The cell membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer. There are two layers made of different proteins and lipids. The individual phospholipids that make up the bilayer are hydrophobic (water-avoiding) non-polar fatty acid tails and a hydrophilic (water-loving) head made of phosphate. These head and tail structures are a phospholipid, and the phospholipids are assembled in a single layer. One layer of phospholipids faces the other layer so that the ends of the two layers are on the outside.

The architecture of lipids and phosphates means that the heads of phospholipids are attracted to water, while the tails are attracted to water. This fact means that the bilayer is semipermeable and only a few molecules can diffuse between the bilayer.

Part of the lipids in animal cells is cholesterol, which is distributed between phospholipids and membrane components. Cholesterol helps hold the cell membrane together and prevent the membrane from becoming rigid by limiting how close the lipids are to each other. Cholesterol is not part of the cell membrane of plant cells, only animal cells. Glycolipids are found on the surface of cell membranes and have carbohydrate sugars attached to them. This allows the cell to differentiate from other cells in the body from foreign compounds or proliferative cells.

There are different types of proteins associated with the cell membrane. Integral membrane proteins are part of the membrane and are able to cross the membrane. Peripheral membrane proteins are bound to the membrane only by interacting with different proteins, and not outside or part of the membrane.

Structural proteins allow our cells to maintain a consistent shape and provide support to the cell, just like the bones of an animal’s body. Receptor proteins are produced by the use of neurotransmitters and hormones that allow the cell to communicate with the environment. Glycoproteins are proteins linked by carbohydrate chains that help cells communicate with other cells and transport molecules across cell membranes. Transport proteins, as their name suggests, are responsible for transporting molecules across cell membranes and into the cell body through a process of accelerated diffusion.

Although the cell membrane is the most famous cell membrane, some organelles found inside the cell also have their own membranes. These membranes help protect organelles from other chemical functions taking place in the cell, separating their components from the rest of the cell. Examples of organelles with their own membranes include vacuoles, lysosomes, and the Golgi apparatus. Vacuoles and lysosomes use membranes to enclose various substances for transport or disposal to the lysosome. The endoplasmic reticulum and the nucleus have their own membranes. Some organelles have more than one membrane, such as mitochondria and chloroplasts found inside plant cells.

Note that the membranes of different membrane-bound organelles do not all have the same molecular composition. The composition of these different membranes depends on the role they have to play. Organelle membranes play an important role in functions such as cellular respiration, protein synthesis, and lipid production.

The cell membrane is not the only part of the cell that plays an important role in its survival and function. The nucleus of a cell is often called the brain of the cell and controls cell reproduction and growth. The nucleus contains the chromosomes that contain the cell’s DNA. The endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the formation of lipids and carbohydrates. The Golgi apparatus is responsible for transporting cellular products to the right places, the ribosomes are involved in the formation of proteins, and the mitochondria are involved in generating the energy used by the cell.

An Introduction To Membrane Proteins

Although commonly referred to as a phospholipid bilayer structure, the cell membrane is composed of many other components, including proteins and carbohydrate groups.

Lipids are the most important components of the cell membrane, making up most of the structure. In general, the cell membrane is shown to represent 50 percent (by weight) of the membrane.

Phospholipids are the most abundant lipids in cell membranes. As the name suggests, phospholipids are composed of a phosphate group and two fatty acid chains (saturated and unsaturated fatty acid chains / fatty acyl tails).

Like triglycerides, it has fatty acid tails and glycerol with an attached phosphate group (compared to triglycerides, phospholipids have only two fatty acid chains and one phosphate molecule).

Functions Of Proteins

While the phosphate group and the glycerol molecule form the core region of the phospholipid, the fatty acid chains are often called the tails.

* The double bond in the unsaturated fatty acid chain causes the chain to bend (with a kink). This causes the chain to push the neighboring phospholipids, thus creating a small distance between the phospholipid molecules. In doing so, the kinks contribute to the overall fluidity of the membrane.

* In water, the phosphate group has a negative charge (because it donates hydrogen ions), which makes the head of the phospholipid hydrophilic.

Compared to the phosphate group, fatty acids are molecularly uncharged and nonpolar. Because of this, they are hydrophobic and repel water molecules.

The amphipathic nature of phospholipids (containing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions) contributes to the main function of these molecules; formation of the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane.

As mentioned above, the phosphate group of the molecule is hydrophilic and attracts water molecules. Also, the fatty acid tails, which are hydrophobic in nature, repel water molecules and therefore repel water.

As a result of this behavior, phospholipids form a layer where the hydrophilic groups face water molecules, while the hydrophobic tails face water. This results in a phospholipid bilayer structure in which the hydrophobic tails of each layer are localized in the hydrophobic region, with phosphate groups in each layer forming the inner and outer faces of the structure.

Because the hydrophobic tails never interact with the aqueous environment (which includes water among other things), the structure remains stable. This is especially important because it helps maintain the overall structure/shape of the cell.

Another important function of phospholipids is to help control the movement of substances inside and outside the cell. As previously mentioned, phospholipids make up the phospholipid bilayer, which is the main barrier between the inside and outside of the cell.
