Sleep Like A Brick: Legoland New York Resort Hotel Opens To The Public
The most exciting opening of 2019 is the TWA Hotel, the result of Eero Saarinen’s major commitment to restore and transform the iconic TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport. The building has been empty since 2001, but after three years of extensive renovations — and the addition of two separate buildings that house the hotel’s 512 rooms — the building is ready for visitors again. The rooms, designed by Stonehill Taylor, recall the station’s 1960s heyday; Expect mid-20th-century modern furnishings, a rotary telephone, and a mirrored wet bar stocked with essential martini ingredients. The Times Square Hotel is the second edition of hotelier Ian Schrager’s C, near Madison Square Park, which opened in 2015. The first new building in 25 years (replacing the old Columbia Theater, circa 1910), the hotel has 452 rooms on 43 floors. A wraparound LED billboard screen on its southwest facade will showcase performances from the hotel’s new Paradise Club, a 5,000-square-foot space that includes a bar and dining room. Equinox, the wellness brand known for its high-end gyms across North America, will open its first hotel at the Hudson Yards megaproject this June. Set over multiple floors at 35 Hudson Yards, the 212-room property is targeted for a June launch and offers spa and wellness room service options, SoulCycle. The main event will include a 60,000-square-foot fitness center, saltwater pool, plunge pool, outdoor pool, and other amenities. Restaurant owner Stephen Starr will be behind the hotel’s food and beverage services. Rooms start at $700 per night.
Sister City is the latest project of Ace Hotel chain. Originally slated to open in 2018, the 200-room hotel in the former Bowery Salvation Army has finally opened. Rooms are small and cozy, with an entry-level option measuring 130 square feet, and even the largest rooms offer enough space for a king-size bed. The small size inspires a minimalist approach, the same things that make Marie Kondo proud, rooms that contain more than a comfortable bed with storage underneath, TVs, nightstands, and rooms with small private baths. A new restaurant on the ground floor, Floret, is run by chef Joe Ogrodnek from Brooklyn’s beloved Battersby’s. Rooms start at $99 a night starting May 1, with starting prices increasing to $169 a night.
M&r Hotel Management Opens Chic Hyatt Centric In New York City
Fortuna Realty Group, the company behind the Hotel Hugo in Soho, will bring another trend to Midtown next summer. Thanks to the efforts of architect Nobutaka Ashihara and interior designer Marcello Pozzi, the Hotel Hendricks hotel’s aesthetic is described as industrial chic. The 176 rooms will feature a mix of animal prints, mirrors and mahogany, while exposed concrete and polished bronze will be distinctive materials in public areas. Plans for the second range range from a tapas restaurant reflecting the same design as the rooms to a year-round rooftop bar with views of Manhattan. The hotel is slated to open June 1, with room rates starting at $176/night.
The millennial-centric Moxy chain (part of the Marriott International brand) has been expanding rapidly across the C, and this Chelsea hotel will open earlier this year. Stonehill Taylor (architecture), Rockwell Group (restaurant and bar) and Yabu Pushelberg (rooms and check-in), who previously worked together on Moxy Times Square, have teamed up again to build the property. The result is a three-story glass atrium that faces the street to reveal a vertical wall of greenery above the modern lounge. The entrance also houses a small flower shop run by celebrity-endorsed florist Putnam & Putnam, where Gwyneth Paltrow is one of their clients. Measuring just 185 square feet, the hotel’s 349 rooms feel more spacious thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and space-saving furnishings including stylish folding tables and chairs. Rooms start at $159/night.
Keep an eye out for the 286-room Moxy East Village, opening in the fall across from Webster Hall in the East Village. In a design different from other Moxy hotels, the Rockwell Group will incorporate the city’s past, present and future into the hotel’s interior, but no further specifics have been revealed yet. Stonehill Taylor is leading the building’s design, and early renderings show a mid-story with floor-to-ceiling windows. The TAO Group plans to operate a basement lounge, a rooftop bar, a restaurant and cafe, and a lobby bar. It is expected to open in September.
When it opens in July, the renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel will feature an active wall in the lobby and rooftop garden terrace, with more greenery around a small rectangular rimmed pool. Blue flower bricks. Stonehill Taylor designed the interiors and rooms with a neutral approach using dark wood and hunter green curtains. Since the new building replaces a previous Antique Garage (RIP) Flea Market, there will be at least flea market nodes throughout the property, such as antique door handles and keys.
