Determine which class you currently fit into or want to fit into and then continue training to prepare for boxing competition.
Find a boxing gym. The difference between a regular gym and a boxing gym is that a boxing gym will provide the staff, trainers, sparring partners and training resources you need to become a competent amateur boxer. Regular gyms may offer classes similar to boxing, but these classes are usually gym rats and fitness enthusiasts, not those training to fight. Additionally, boxing-like activities such as cardio kickboxing should not involve actual contact with a partner or boxing training equipment such as a punching bag.

Find a coach. A boxing coach will teach you proper punching techniques, hold gloves while you kick and watch you hit the punching bag, and give you tips on how to improve your form. He can also give effective advice on exercise and nutrition. Talk to the owner of the boxing studio to see if he knows of any reputable boxing trainers.
Get an amateur boxing license. You must first pass a physical examination. Talk to your boxing coach or boxing gym owners to see if they know of any doctors who specialize in physical amateur boxing. Once you have passed the physical, obtain a signed copy of the physical form, download and complete the USA Boxing application. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application. Submit a completed amateur boxing application form, signed physical form, two passport size photographs, original or certified copy of birth certificate and registration fee to your local boxing committee.
Register for your first event. Once you have properly trained and prepared for boxing, your trainer will announce that you are ready to participate and fight in an amateur boxing event. Your weight determines the class in which you will start your amateur boxing career. Amateur boxing events are both local and national, and many culminate in a championship. Boxing centers are great places to train, sweat and have fun. But they can also seem intimidating to beginners considering their exercise routine, but don’t worry – you don’t need any experience to join a boxing gym!
And we wanted to know – as one of America’s premier boxing studios, RockBox Fitness has helped countless people from coast to coast to become a true ring champion!
