Even from a generally risk-averse perspective (which is a topic for an entire blog in itself), my family and I were fine because we made good financial decisions, including prioritizing savings, investing, and living within our means.

With the book, I confirmed my business idea and before jumping into it every time, I said to myself that it gives me a lot of confidence and I am sure that I can succeed. This is the approach I would recommend to most engineers, especially if your business idea is for information, consulting, or service-type products.
The obvious exceptions are if you plan to start a company that competes with your current employer, or if you signed an employment contract stating that all of your intellectual property belongs to your employer. However, you can establish your authority in your field by publishing technical articles on LinkedIn or even on your employer’s blog.

It takes very little time to start a YouTube channel, website, blog or podcast for business courses. Setting up a store on Amazon, Exchange or Etsy is easy. The book is a bit of a commitment, but it was worth it for me (maybe not for you).
These “side projects” are definitely time consuming, but not difficult if you set it up yourself and most things can be done automatically if you allow the budget for the necessary software projects. If you want it bad enough, you’ll make time. If you can’t make the time……well, maybe entrepreneurship isn’t the right path for you.
Most importantly, this type of business forces you to push yourself into that sweet spot every time, which should make you think about the business process.
Many of today’s most successful entrepreneurs took years to make it big. Overnight success is a myth. Starting a side business first allows you to use your day job to support your dreams without the financial constraints of taking on a half-baked idea that may not even have a market.
