Arguably the most important thing you can do when getting your punching bag is to fill the base. To do this, you can use water, sand or a combination of the two. For a heavy bag, choosing to fill the base with sand is best, but filling with water will give you a strong and stable base. Jump rope is great for boxing because it helps with concentration, quickness and speed, and cardiovascular endurance. You can start by jumping rope for 2 minutes or do 5 to 10 minutes with an extra cardio kick.

You don’t need boxing equipment for shadowboxing exercises, making them easy to do anywhere. Shadowboxing can help you practice perfect form, stance and striking, as you can act out different situations that may arise when facing an opponent. You can start with a jab, punch drill, or practice your own defensive techniques, such as a slide, where you bend your knees slightly and raise your arms to protect your face and move your head to the side.

Heavy bag drills can help you build strength. You can do a simple drill with a few quick jabs, reset and throw in 2 quick jabs, repeating the 3 minute cycle.

Boxers must have a strong core. Although you always engage your core while boxing, you can do additional work such as squats, lunges and elbow planks (push on your elbows) to high planks, etc.

If you are a beginner, the first thing you want to do is familiarize yourself with the basics of boxing:

Your posture is very important because if you don’t use proper form, you can lose your balance and your punches won’t work. In boxer stance, imagine your feet are on opposite sides of an imaginary line and parallel. Your weight is distributed evenly. Both your hands are up to protect your face and your chin is slightly tucked. Your dominant hand will be your back hand.

The jab is the most important punch in boxing. Used to set up multiple punches and distract your opponent. From the fighting position (hands up, elbows in, looking over your eyebrows), start the jab by raising your lead leg, slowly. As the weight returns to the bottom, extend the fist of the lead hand straight out in front of you. Make sure to turn your elbows in so your palms are facing the ground.

From your stance, drop your back arm from your chin, crossing the body and moving toward the target in a straight line. Shoulders should rotate 180 degrees while arm crosses body, elbows rotate into back fist in extension. At the same time, the leading hand is withdrawn and placed on the face to protect the chin. For more power, rotate your torso and hips as the cross is launched.

From the fighting position, start by shifting your weight from the lead leg to the back leg. As the weight is transferred, the shoulders should rotate back while raising the elbow to a 90-degree angle while aiming for the target. The lead leg should rotate and rotate at the end of the feed.
